An ordinary yet exciting day at Do It Up actually starts the night before where I check the list of inclusions, the address on Google maps, the time of the setup and all other details of the event to be well prepared. It’s like an unsaid protocol I follow to avoid any last minute panic on site!
Mornings start at the office to pack for the setup, usually with two of our staff members without whom it would be impossible to get through the day. Sometimes I pack for two or three setups at a time, which goes in different vehicles, so keeping a note of every little detail is really important. From crates to bamboos, centerpieces to mattresses, even the smallest things like batteries or cello tapes matter the most. I usually write down the entire list a night before to avoid any errors and always cross check with my co-designer – Shivani, or our customer relationship manager – Niyoshi if there is anything specific that the client has asked for. Once everything is packed and sanitized we head to our location.
As our office is located in Navi Mumbai and a majority of our setups are in the suburbs or in South Bombay, we make sure we leave at least an hour early for the setup. It usually takes us an hour or two to finish the setup.
Sometimes, the set-up includes other customizations like chairs, tables, real florals, helium balloons or big scale backdrops which need to be ordered, procured well in advance from our vendors. Making sure that the vendors reach on time is extremely important. I make sure that the vendors know 3-4 days in advance and are reminded again the day before the setup to avoid any kind of delays.
As we are about 5-10 minutes away, I call the client to let them know we are almost there. At the site, while the staff unloads the inventory, I head to have a look at the site realtime and chat with the client to understand their requirements better. It does help a lot when the client tells me about how he/she has imagined the setup to be and we spend the first 15 minutes discussing what works and what will look the best! I always make sure to finish the setup at least 30 minutes in advance so that I can spare some time to click a few pictures for the gram and my own little memories!
Ending the day with a happy client and a beautiful setup is the best feeling. When the client shares beautiful pictures of how they celebrated their day in a setup I put together is like a cherry on the top!
